We all have our reasons, be it for joy, vanity, escape, need, or one of a million other motivators. I recently contributed to a class project on donorschoose.org. I admit, there was a bit of pride involved because Days Gone Bad was one of the novels chosen for their class project.
Several months later, something came in the mail that I didn’t expect. It was a small packet of thank you notes, only they weren’t the typical thank you form letters you usually associate with donations. No “Thank you mr/ms insertnamehere for your donation to insertprojecthere.” It was hand written notes from students. Here my friends, I was reminded of one of the most important reasons we write. Buried inside those wonderful notes were the words “I don’t read much, but your book has really opened me up to the joys of reading.”
That thank you letter has inspired me to strive harder to do even better. You never know who might read your stories once they’re let loose into the world.
Don’t let them down.
